SLU / Pilot Studies – Magnetic blanket for horse
On three different occasions, SLU performed measurements with the so-called. PPG (fotopletsysmografi):
- On a sleeping* horse (spring -06)
- On a awake horses (March and June -08)
Blood flow and blood flow variations related to blood pressure, recorded at the first study in the triceps, in the long back muscle and in kruppans* muscle and skin and directly on leg.
Blood flow in the triceps registered under the application of a magnetic blanket (Magnet Health) and showed an increased high blood flow (ca. 33%) while the blanket was on.
After the blanket was removed, the blood flow decreased.
This first pilot study was revolutionary and gave interest from Leg. Vet. Anna Edner, to undertake further studies at SLU.
Values* of the study in spring -06:
Measuring code: AC DC Comment
1 3.151 0.334 After 10 min.
2 3.663 0.354 After 20 min.
3 3.492 0.380 After 30 min. (ev. temporary decline before new pick-up)
4 3.829 0.383 After 40 min.
5 2.881 0.395 10 min after removal of the magnetic cover.
The basic value was calculated at ca. 2.8, ie. same value as after removal of the magnetic blanket.
When comparing the basic value (2.8) and the maximum measured value (3.8), it showed an increase in muscle blood flow
at ca. 33%.
On March 19th -08 there were made new measurements with the same method, i.e. PPG (fotopletsysmografi).
In order to once again verify the measurement method, it was conducted the first measurements of a horse during anesthetized (sedated) just like the spring of -06, and because of then be tested on an awake, up tied horse.
The equipment worked perfectly and the following values were:
Measurements taken around 2 cm down the long back muscle:
- Magnetic blanket (1 000 Gauss per magnet) / 20 minutes / blood flow = + 30%
- Placebo blanket (blanket with magnets without strength, 0 Gauss) / 20 minutes / blood flow = + -0%
- Blanket with ceramic fibers (Back on Track) / 20 minutes / blood flow = + - 0%
The latest study from June 10th is absolutely revolutionary!
After 55 minutes with a magnetic blanket, a registered marked increase of as much as 45%!
The study was made, once again, in cooperation with the Leg. Veterinary Anna Edner.
All blood flow measurements have been made with PPG (fotopletsysmografi) by Doc. Lars-Göran
Lindberg, Linköping University.
Measurements taken around 2 cm down the long back muscle:
- Placebo Blanket / 55 minutes / blood flow: + - 0%
- Magnetic Blanket / 55 minutes / blood flow: + 45%
- Blanket with ceramic fibers (Back on Track) / 20 minutes / blood flow: + -0%

This study showed an increased blood circulation of approx. 30% and was shown with scintigrafi *.
* Scintigrafi
At scintigrafi the body is given, a radioactive substance, usually in the blood. With a so-called gamma camera, which converts radiation into images (scintigram), imaging the distribution of radioactivity in the body on a monitor. By using different carried substances the radioactivity to seek to different organs or tissues inside the body. Diseased tissue shows an abnormal pattern in the distribution of radioactivity compared with healthy tissue.
